For the first time, I used a photograph I did not take myself as a reference tool. My son Jack took a picture of me while we were on a mother/son trip in Homer, Alaska. As soon as I saw the photograph I realized I needed to paint it. It captured everything I found so valuable about this travel experience with my son. It also created challenges that I’ve wanted to explore, such as capturing the movement and reflection in the water.
In planning the painting, what I really wanted to express was the vastness of the Alaskan landscape and the transcendent peace one can find in nature. Spending an entire day by ourselves on Tutka Bay made me realize how rare it is for the majority of mankind to explore these remote areas of wilderness the world offers and how precious these wilderness areas are.
